Butterfly reef - Original Painting

This small acrylic painting on deep-edged stretched canvas is inspired by vibrant coral reefs of the Red Sea. The two bluecheek butterfly fish dancing across the canvas are native to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. These small, perfectly formed yellow fish with their characteristic blue masks are typically found in small groups or pairs.

They are found in shallow coral reef habitats and feed on a varied diet, including algae, coral polyps, small invertebrates and zooplankton. They play a role in keeping coral reefs healthy by grazing on algae that would otherwise proliferate and engulf the reef.  

This species of butterflyfish is known to exhibit “pair bonding.” Unlike many other butterflyfish species that form loose pairs, bluecheek butterflyfishes are monogamous and form strong lifelong pair bonds. Once a pair forms, they remain together throughout their lives, often swimming side by side and defending their territory together. In this way, this painting represents a love story among fish.
