Glowing garibaldi fish, Original Painting
Glowing garibaldi fish, Original Painting
This painting is inspired by the mysterious giant kelp forests off the western coast of the USA, and the bright orange garibaldi fish which live among them. This garibaldi fish glows in the gloom as it swims between towering fronds of kelp and seaweed.
The garibaldi fish is a member of the damselfish family. Damselfish are known for their feisty temperament’s and fierce defense of their territories and garibaldi fish are no exception.
The male garibaldi is the one that selects the nesting are and prepares it for laying of eggs by the female. Males will fiercely defend their nesting area and territory, chasing away other fish and even divers.
Garibaldis are round, plump bright orange fish with flowing pectoral and tail fins, and staring yellow eyes. They are found in temperate waters primarily off the coast of California, from Monterey Bay south towards the northern Baja coastline. The Channel Islands of California are particularly important habitat for this species.
Swimming through dark reefs and brown kelp, they shine a jolt of glowing orange, a reminder that garibaldis are relatives of coral-reef damselfish.
Unlike their relatives, the garibaldi lives in cooler temperate waters. Their habitat ranges from shallow waters down to depths of approximately 30m, including shallow rocky reefs, where they swim among the kelp forests.
These kelp forests are a critical habitat element as they provide potential protection from predators, are a source of food, and are important reproductive grounds.
The garibaldi is the State marine fish of California and is protected in this State, making its possession illegal.
This painting was created using acrylics and acrylic glazes to build up layers of paint. Some of the paints used are iridescent, creating interesting effects in the light.
