Kelp forest, UK, Original Painting
Kelp forest, UK, Original Painting
This oil painting is inspired by the mysterious kelp forests of the Farne Islands in the UK. The painting was built up in layers of acrylic paint and acrylic glazes to create the effect of light shining gleaming through the water.
The kelp forests of the Farne Islands are rich and biodiverse. Kelp is a form of large brown seaweed. Kelp grows on rocky shores in water from one metre down to about 30 metres deep, where there is enough sunlight.
Kelp can form dense underwater forests, which are one of the most productive ecosystems on the Earth. These forests soak up large amounts of carbon and are good for stabilizing the climate, shore protection, and provide food and habitat for many sea creatures.
This painting shows Laminaria hyperborea, a species of kelp which has up to 3 metre leaves and forms beautiful dense forests with an understory of red algal turf. Sea urchins, small crabs, squat lobsters and anemones can be found living among their roots. Kelp forests are highly productive ecosystems.
According to the Wildlife Trusts, the UK has the most diverse community of kelp species compared to any other country in Europe, with 7 out of the 14 species found across Europe.
